SUMMARY:Reckless Kelly at the Levitt Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:The heartland gave Reckless Kelly authenticity. Musical lives honed their skills. Adversity instilled their persistence\, and moving to Austin gave the Grammy winners wings to fly. As kids\, the Brauns – Cody\, Willy\, Micky and Gary – shared a stage with Johnny Cash\, Glen Campbell and Merle Haggard. Micky and Gary now helm their own band\, Micky and the Motorcars (who performed at the Levitt last summer). Cody and Willy\, with drummer\, Jay Nazz\, created Reckless Kelly. The band took its name from the legend of Ned Kelly\, the Australian highwayman\, and the three moved to Austin in 1996. Early on\, Robert Earl Keen*\, a Texas singer/songwriter legend himself\, took them under his wing and became their first manager. They listened\, watched and interacted with the creative dynamos of the outlaw country scene – Townes Van Zandt\, Steve Earle\, Billy Joe Shaver\, Guy Clark and others – and joined them in a redefinition of what contemporary country music had become. Theirs was gritty\, hard-edged\, uncompromising and convincing. Their 1998 self-released debut branded Reckless Kelly with a reputation as a band of no-nonsense insurgents that could raise the rafters while still retaining a heart and soul of honesty\, soul and conviction. Reckless Kelly’s string of critically acclaimed albums\, Under the Table and Above the Sun (2003)\, Wicked Twisted Road (2005)\, Bulletproof (2008)\, Somewhere in Time (2010)\, Grammy-nominated Good Luck & True Love (2011) and Grammy-winning Long Night Moon (2013)\, set a standard of reliable excellence and commitment to an instinctive vision of Americana. The group’s new album\, Sunset Motel\, reflects Reckless Kelly’s attention to craft and continuity.

SUMMARY:The Gibbonses at the Levitt Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Husband and wife\, Jackie and Brandon Gibbons\, formed the Dallas-based\, multi-instrumentalist Americana duo\, The Gibbonses\, in early 2015 after relocating from Seattle.\nA few months after arriving back in Texas\, The Gibbonses became one of only 12 bands selected from more than 150 applicants to compete in Ranch Factor 2015\, a battle of the bands hosted by 95.9FM The Ranch\, where they advanced all the way to the final four! Since then\, the band has logged countless miles with more than 200 performances all across Texas\, up and down the east coast\, and through the Midwest. In 2016\, they released their full-length debut\, Among The Rubble\, recorded in Los Angeles with producer Jamie Hill. The duo was awarded first place in Rattle Music magazine’s Spring Songwriter Contest and also competed in Larry Joe Taylor’s 2016 Songwriter Showcase. In January\, The Gibbonses received the Texas Music Pickers 2016 Newcomer of the Year Award. The Gibbonses have opened for Gary Morris\, Blue Water Highway Band\, William Michael Morgan\, Midnight River Choir\, Brandon Rhyder\, Kimberly Dunn and Troy Cartwright\, to name a few\, and had the pleasure of sharing festival stages with Sam Riggs\, William Clark Green\, Prophets and Outlaws\, and many other well-known Texas musicians. For Jackie and Brandon\, it has always been their love of performing that has driven them to pursue their musical careers from a young age. Whether they’re performing for 20 close friends at an intimate house concert or onstage in front of a large crowd\, the couple have a way of connecting with each and every person in the audience and making them feel like a part of the family.

SUMMARY:Patrice Pike at the Levitt Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Patrice Pike burst on to the music scene as the electric front woman for the Austin jam band Little Sister/Sister Seven. Soon after\, she co-wrote and sang Sister Seven’s top 10 Billboard hit “Know What You Mean.” Richard Skanse for Rolling Stone called her “Tina Turner\, Bessie Smith\, Janis Joplin and Robert Plant all rolled up into a tiny but explosive package.” Billboard magazine has called her “One of the best up and coming contemporary rock singers in America.” After Sister Seven disbanded\, Patrice began her solo career with her album\, Fencing Under Fire\, which landed in the top 10 most added on AAA radio for multiple weeks. Her solo material took an increasingly narrative turn\, while her sound has moved steadily in the direction of an eclectic mix of rock and soul topped with a tinge of world music flavor. Patrice effortlessly moves from tightly woven rhythm guitar to a drum kit on stage while never dropping a beat of her fierce but silky lead vocals. Over the past decade she has independently released five critically acclaimed solo records\, showcasing her socially astute\, literate lyrics alongside her powerful vocals. She has toured relentlessly\, both in the United States and abroad\, building an impressive grassroots fan base. In 2007\, she became the youngest member of the Austin/Texas Music Hall of Fame\, inducted alongside Lucinda Williams. The resilient Patrice has been able to adapt repeatedly to a rapidly changing music landscape that bears no resemblance to the one she entered in her teens. She continues to grow and evolve as both a songwriter and a performer. A long-time respected social and environmental activist\, Patrice is the co-founder of the Step Onward Foundation (formerly Grace Foundation USA)\, an organization that provides services for young adult survivors of homelessness. Twenty years into her musical career\, she’s much more than one of the most dynamic live performers in the world\, she’s also an artist of substance with a compelling life story that is only beginning to unfold.

SUMMARY:Robert Earl Keen at the Levitt Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Three decades after the release of his debut album\, No Kinda Dancer\, with 18 recordings to his name and thousands of shows in his rear-view mirror\, Keen has blazed a peer-\, critic- and fan-lauded trail that’s earned him living legend status in Americana music and at home in Texas. He is a member of the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame along with the late Townes Van Zandt\, who Keen has toured with\, and his longtime friend and fellow Aggie\, Lyle Lovett. A short stint in Nashville earned Keen a publishing deal\, a label and a national booking agent\, but it was 1989’s West Textures album\, and the debut of “The Road Goes On Forever” in particular\, that kicked his career into high gear. His literate songwriting and razor wit created a grassroots following for instant classics like “Corpus Christi Bay\,” “Whenever Kindness Fails\,” “Gringo Honeymoon\,” “Dreadful Selfish Crime” and “Merry Christmas From the Family.” In 2015\, Keen ventured into bluegrass territory with Happy Prisoner: The Bluegrass Sessions\, and emerged as Billboard magazine’s number two Bluegrass Artist of the Year. The recording was in 2015’s top five at Americana Radio and second on Billboard’s Bluegrass Albums chart. Keen has worked with Dave Matthews\, Bonnie Raitt\, Sheryl Crow\, Eric Church and Gary Clark Jr. and has appeared on Austin City Limits. In 2015\, he received the first official BMI Troubadour Award. Last fall\, Texas Monthly magazine described Keen by saying\, “From tales of romance on the Rio Grande in ‘Gringo Honeymoon\,’ to the humor and dysfunction of the holiday season in ‘Merry Christmas From the Family\,’ Keen writes of Texas and Texans with wit\, tenderness\, and an acuity typically reserved for Pulitzer Prize-winning novelists such as Larry McMurtry.” Keen’s newest double CD\, Live Dinner Reunion\, revisits Keen’s best-selling 1996 recording\, Live No. 2 Dinner. The refreshed version features special guests Cory Morrow\, Cody Canada\, Bruce Robison\, Joe Ely\, Cody Braun\, and Lovett\, who co-wrote “The Front Porch Song” with Keen for Live No. 2 Dinner.

SUMMARY:Somebody's Darling at the Levitt Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Their name may sound like a soft lullaby\, but Somebody’s Darling is anything but sleepy. The five Texas-born musicians jam bluesy rock ‘n’ roll tunes that are big and commanding in every possible way\, from lead singer Amber Farris’ impressive vocal chops and wild blonde hair to the band’s gritty rhythm section and grooving guitar licks. Think My Morning Jacket fronted by a woman or Alabama Shakes if they’d been born in Texas. Now together for seven years and three albums\, their most recent release\, Adult Roommates\, takes a mature and sometimes stark look at what it means to be a working band. The Dallas band recently relocated to Nashville to tour and write their next record.

SUMMARY:Ray Wylie Hubbard at the Levitt Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:The only thing better than a Ray Wylie Hubbard song is a Ray Wylie Hubbard story to go with it! Ray started his journey as a folk singer in the ’60s before falling in with the wild and wooly cosmic/outlaw Texas country scene of the ’70s — in large part by penning the immortal Up Against the Wall (Redneck Mother)\, which Jerry Jeff Walker recorded. Ray performed constantly and recorded sporadically throughout the rest of the ’70s and ’80s\, but his career as a songwriter’s songwriter began in earnest with 1994’s Loco Gringo’s Lament. He’s moved from strength to strength ever since\, recording acclaimed albums\, earning praise and awards from his peers\, entertaining anyone who listens with his story-telling\, and cementing his standing as one of the most respected artists on the modern Americana scene. He has 16 albums\, including his most recent\, The Ruffian’s Misfortune\, as well as an autobiography\, A Life … Well\, Lived.

With infectious melodies delivered with lyrical precision and honesty\, Daphne’s music is sincere\, compelling and relevant. Raised in Chicago and relocated to Nashville\, Daphne includes among her influences Elvis Costello and Michael Jackson\, but her music cleverly incorporates these inspirations into a style that is refreshing and contemporary in a way that suits her songs best. Daphne is currently a pop writer at Sony/ATV and continues to release music and tour as an Indie Artist. Her fifth recording\, 2014’s Live to Try\, features songs co-written with Hunter Davis\, Chris Faulk\, Angela Lauer\, John Oates (of Hall & Oates)\, Keri Barnes and Tim Lauer\, while 2015’s Get It EP kicks off with the track “Done With Bein’ Done\,” which Daphne co-wrote with Grammy winner Meghan Trainor. SUMMARY:Brad Thompson & the Undulating Band at the Levitt Pavilion
DESCRIPTION:Brad Thompson’s musical roots started at an early age. Both of his parents were avid music fans and musicians. Brad’s earliest memories are of his dad picking out Luther Perkin’s guitar parts off of Johnny Cash’s albums. Brad’s mom\, an accomplished vocalist and pianist\, tried her hand at classical guitar\, but when it didn’t work out\, she handed her guitar to 12-year-old Brad\, who started taking private lessons. As a student at the University of North Texas\, Brad became friends with singer/lyricist Eddie Allen and within two years of entering college\, they both pursued music full time\, writing and performing at clubs like The Hop in Fort Worth\, Poor David’s Pub in Dallas\, the Kerrville Folk Festival and other havens for young songwriters. Brad went solo in 1992 and has recorded seven CDs. His songwriting and performances show the influences of Michael Hedges\, Lyle Lovett\, Jeff Buckley\, Toad the Wet Sprocket and Counting Crows.
