SUMMARY:February Arlington on Tap
DESCRIPTION:O.K. Carter up next at Arlington on Tap with Great Women of Arlington. \nAuthor\, historian and raconteur O.K. Carter will provide February’s Arlington on Tap attendees a humorous preview of a new chapter to the third edition of his award-winning city history – Caddos\, Cotton and Cowboys: Essays on Arlington. \nThe topic and the new chapter: Great Women of Arlington. \nThe time and place: 6 p.m. Feb. 13\, Gilligan’s Bar and Grill (the saloon)\, 400 E. Abram St. \n“Think of it as a sort of warmup for Valentine’s Day\, since Tap will be Feb. 13\,” Carter said. \nThough the first two editions of Carter’s book were in the conventional print and paper mode\, the third edition will be an Amazon e-book – and also considerably less costly. It will be available later this year. \n“Though I’m personally a fan of traditional page-turner book formats\, it’s a digital world\,” Carter said. “This third edition also provides an opportunity to update quite a few chapters of the book\, there being a number of pivotal changes in city politics\, economics\, culture and population trends. I’ve also never bought into the “it’s a man’s world” mindset and this chapter on some of the remarkable women so critical to Arlington’s evolution is a reflection on that reality and should have been included in the original version.”

SUMMARY:March Arlington on Tap
DESCRIPTION:Next at Arlington on Tap: THE answer \nDr. Bill Coppola\, president of Arlington’s Southeast Tarrant County College\ncampus\, makes his debut at the downtown lecture series and happy hour Arlington\non Tap March 13 with a tantalizing topic: \nThe talk: Community Colleges: THE answer. \nThe place and time\, March 13 (a Tuesday)\, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.\, Hooligan’s Bar\nin downtown Arlington\, 310 E. Abram St. \n“Even President Trump has been chiming in lately about the role of\ncommunity colleges in developing a skilled workforce\, but I Coppola has been a\nregional and national leader on that particular topic for a couple of decades\,” said\nMark Joeckel\, a founder of Arlington on Tap along with former Arlington Star-\nTelegram Publisher O.K. Carter. \nBefore joining TCC\, Coppola worked with both Lone Star College and\nDallas County Community College. He’s a former recipient of the Innovator of the\nYear Award in higher education\, as well as the winner of the national Excellence\nin Teaching Award. \nCarter\, himself a former TCC trustee\, said far too few people were\nacquainted with community college advantages\, ranging from early enrollment and\ncredit while still in high school to access to a multitude of well-paying vocational\njobs through either certification or a two-year associate’s degree. \n“Both parents and their children can saddle themselves with enormous debt\nin the tens of thousands of dollars even if they’re attending a conventional four-\nyear public college or university\,” Carter said. “By contrast it’s entirely possible to\nattend a fully-accredited community college full time with tuition and books for a\nthousand bucks a semester\, so it makes dollars and sense to attend a community\ncollege first\, even if the idea is to eventually transfer to a four-year college.\n“We also live in a workforce environment where constant retraining is often\nnecessary even for older member\, sometimes just requiring a course or two – or a\ncertification — to cash in on job opportunities with higher pay. So\, Coppola is\ncorrect – community colleges are the affordable\, accessible answer to a lot of\ncareer dilemmas.” \nCoppola will deliver what he promises will be a “scintillating” review of the\npossibilities in 30 minutes or less. \nArlington on Tap sessions are free\, no RSVP required. Sponsors include the\nArlington Historical Society\, Arlington Proud and Arlington Today Magazine.

SUMMARY:Methodist Mansfield Medical Center Offers High School Athletes
DESCRIPTION:Methodist Mansfield Medical Center Offers High School Athletes \nUIL Athletic Physicals and Free Heart Screenings \nEchocardiograms can detect heart anomalies in teenage athletes \nMansfield Independent School District (MISD)\, Midlothian Independent School District\, and South Grand Prairie High School Athletic Departments are partnering with Methodist Mansfield Medical Center to offer UIL sports physicals to middle and high school student athletes. Physicals and echocardiograms will take place at the following locations. \nMansfield ISD – Methodist Mansfield Medical Center – April 14\, 2018 – 9 a.m. – Noon \nMidlothian ISD – Heritage High School\, Midlothian – May 19\, 2018 – 9 a.m. – Noon \nS. Grand Prairie HS – Methodist Convenient Care Clinic – June 2\, 2018 – 9 a.m. – Noon \nThe hospital will also offer free\, optional echocardiogram screenings at each location with an appointment. During an echocardiogram\, an ultrasound is used to examine the heart\, so physicians can detect potential abnormalities or other cardiovascular conditions that may affect student athletes. This echocardiogram test has saved 13 lives in the nine years the hospital has offered them. \nThe sports physicals and echocardiogram screenings will be performed by volunteer nurses\, allied health professionals\, and independently practicing physicians from Methodist Mansfield. Sports echos will be led by Alan Taylor\, MD\, and Levi Rice\, DO\, cardiologist on the medial staff at Methodist Mansfield. Jeff McDaniel\, MD\, and Juan Gavalda\, MD\, will lead the team of physicians in performing the sports physicals. \nTo register for sports physical or echocardiograms go to https://www.methodisthealthsystem.org/sports-physicals-sign-up/. Appointments are on a first come/first serve basis. Don’t delay sign up today. \n“This is an incredible opportunity for our student athletes to have a quality physical exam\,” said Mansfield ISD Athletic Director Philip O’Neal. “The generous donations of time and equipment many of our students will have access to comprehensive tests.” \n“Our goal is to provide a quality UIL physical exam to ensure all of our athletes can compete safely\,” said MISD District Athletic Trainer Andy Starnes. \nParents of middle school and high school student athletes who wish to participate in the echocardiogram screening must complete a medical history questionnaire and sign medical releases prior to the screening. The forms are available from the school’s athletic directors or on the website. \nEchocardiogram screenings will be offered on a first come\, first served basis and will be conducted by appointment only by https://www.methodisthealthsystem.org/sports-physicals-sign-up/ \nParents must accompany their teens during this painless\, non-invasive test. \nThe sports physical is not intended to replace a student’s regular physical exam with their primary care physician\, but it will meet UIL requirements to medically clear students before they can participate in any organized sports activity. The echocardiogram procedure is a screening exam and does not rule out all heart-related causes of illness. \nThe Methodist Mansfield sports physicals and echocardiogram community outreach program was honored with both a 2018 Fort Worth Business Press Healthcare Hero Award and a 2017 D CEO Excellence in Healthcare Award. \nAbout Methodist Health System \nGuided by the founding principles of life\, learning\, and compassion\, Dallas-based Methodist Health System (Methodist) provides quality\, integrated health care to improve and save the lives of individuals and families throughout North Texas. Ten hospitals proudly carry the Methodist Health System brand\, as owners or through affiliation.
