In a nutshell: Combining colorful, bold lines of cartoons with the raw energy of Art Brut artists like Jean DuBuffet, Haring developed a distinct pop-graffiti aesthetic centered on fluid, bold outlines against a dense, rhythmic overspread of iconic pop art imagery. Haring explored social themes, which were emblematic of his time, such as exploitation, consumerism, social discrimination, drug abuse and the HIV/AIDS crisis.
