Last month, there was a knock on our office door. A man from Argentina had come to learn more about guiding visitors to Arlington. His name was Matías, and he had been living in the United States for a little over a decade. He ran a Facebook group meant to assist his fellow countrymen who were moving to or visiting the United States. His background in media and travel was interesting, but what stood out in the conversation was not his work. It was the way he talked about soccer.

He shared stories of people he knows from Argentina who have been preparing for this moment since it was announced. There is a group of Argentinians who embarked on a bike trip to the US long before it had a confirmed where or when their team would be playing, simply moving closer as the World Cup approached.

As we stood talking in our foyer, it was finally hitting me: after over a year of planning for this tournament, the emotional weight of these games was really setting in. For these fans, soccer is not only an event. It is something that runs through daily life. It carries identity in a way that extends far beyond the game itself. In moments like this, it becomes clear that this is not just people traveling for a tournament. It is something bigger unfolding in real time.

As one of the host cities, Arlington is right in the middle of something larger than itself. Despite all the rigamarole that it takes to host something of this scale, it is a true honor to play host to such an important moment in so many people’s lives, and we are primed to have a front-row seat as it unfolds.

In Downtown Arlington, that idea has shaped how local businesses are approaching the World Cup. They’re rolling out the welcome mat, inviting visitors and locals alike to “Kick It in Downtown” as Arlington welcomes the world. It is a fitting invitation for a city where the world comes to play. Businesses are creating ways for people to experience the tournament beyond the stadium. Restaurants, bars, shops, and community spaces will offer watch opportunities, extended hours, themed menu items and drinks, live music, and a range of events and activities.

One of the main gathering places throughout the tournament will be J. Gilligan’s Bar & Grill, where watch parties will bring people together throughout the day. J. Gilligan’s will also continue its shuttle connection to AT&T Stadium, known during the tournament as Dallas Stadium, helping link Downtown directly to the matches.

Throughout Downtown, the energy of the tournament will spill into everyday spaces, turning restaurants, shops, parks, and gathering places into part of the celebration itself.

Visitors and locals alike will find game-day specials and themed menus at places like Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, Amore Mio Trattoria, Hooligans Pub, Kung Fu Tea, and Arwa Yemeni Coffee, while watch parties at Cane Rosso, Element Cocktail Lounge, Taqueria Acapulquito, and Truth Vinyl create spaces for fans to gather long after kickoff.

Shops across Downtown are joining in as well. Stash VHS is curating a soccer-themed vintage collection, Goldilink’s Jewelry is offering team-color pieces and giveaways, and storefronts throughout the district will reflect the spirit of the tournament in their own creative ways.

Community organizations are helping make the experience welcoming for all ages. Big Brothers Big Sisters will host trivia and bingo events, while the George W. Hawkes Downtown Library will offer summer reading activities, crafts, and family-friendly programming throughout the tournament.

That spirit of hosting continues at Rotary DREAM Park, where public space becomes part of the experience itself. A 3D art installation by artist Jan Riggins will serve as a focal point during the tournament. In front of the iconic DREAM sculpture, this large-scale ground mural will create a Texas-inspired, soccer-themed interactive photo opportunity at the center of the park. From afternoon into the evening on game days, live music and performances will keep the space active and create a steady rhythm of movement and connection throughout Downtown.

That connection is not just happening through activities. It is also taking shape between Downtown Arlington and the Entertainment District. With the opening of Caravan Court Hotel positioned between the two, that relationship begins to shift. It creates a point of connection that allows people to move more easily between spaces, especially with the newly built sidewalks along Collins Street. That movement helps visitors experience more of Arlington as a whole city, not a collection of separate destinations.

Caravan Court has another special connection to the games. Owner Sam Mahrouq and his team are from Jordan, one of the tournament’s most electric stories and a first-time qualifier. Texas is home to the second-largest population of Jordanian residents in the country. That means the excitement around Jordan’s team will be deeply felt here, especially when Jordan plays Argentina at Dallas Stadium in Arlington. That excitement will spill over into Downtown with a very special celebration at the Levitt Pavilion.

Of course, much of the World Cup activity will center around Arlington’s Entertainment District, where several World Cup-related elements are already shaping the visitor experience. The Texan Golden Boot, a permanent public art installation, now stands as a symbol of the intersection between the global event and Texas heritage. Inside Choctaw Stadium, Ambassador Row will bring international embassies into a space designed to support visiting fans. Nearby, the Arlington Museum of Art’s “More Than a Match” exhibition showcases World Cup memorabilia and contemporary art drawn from collections around the world, offering another way for fans to engage with the history and culture surrounding the game.

By the time this is being read, FIFA World Cup matches will already be underway in Arlington. The city will be in motion. Stadiums will be full, streets will be active, and visitors from around the world will be moving through Downtown. For visitors, it is a chance to see Arlington beyond the stadium and experience the everyday spaces that make the city feel real. For locals, this is an invitation to experience their own city differently. Visit downtownarlington.org/soccer for a full list of opportunities to get a front-row seat to the action.
