Innovate Arlington, the City of Arlington’s proposed long‑range comprehensive plan, is nearing a major milestone. After 18 months of community engagement, analysis and visioning, the draft plan will soon be available. To support that process, the City will host a series of town halls where residents can learn more about the plan, ask questions and share feedback.

Innovate Arlington provides a strategic framework to guide growth, investment and decision‑making over the next 20 years. The plan describes Arlington’s vision for the future along with key policies and catalytic ideas as well as how the City can implement that vision through coordinated actions, regulatory updates and targeted investments.

Community engagement consistently highlighted several priorities for Arlington’s future, including better public transportation options, improved walkability and bike connectivity, stronger green infrastructure, more connected corridors, thoughtful density, housing diversity, and better use of existing community assets. These themes shaped the plan’s five core implementation priorities:

  • Vibrant & Safe: Arlington is a great place to live that residents are proud to call home, with beautiful neighborhoods, vibrant and fun gathering places, access to daily needs and amenities, and a variety of housing options.
  • Innovative & Thriving: Arlington is a world-class city, serving as a leader in innovation with thriving residents and businesses that contribute to a prosperous local economy.
  • Connected & Walkable: Arlington’s destinations are connected to neighborhoods with multimodal infrastructure that allow comfortable, safe, and convenient options for how residents and visitors get around.
  • Sustainable & Healthy: Arlington plans for future resiliency, invests in sustainable infrastructure, prioritizes community health, protects open spaces, and the natural environment.
  • Welcoming & Community Culture: Arlington plans for future resiliency, invests in sustainable infrastructure, prioritizes community health, protects open spaces, and the natural environment.

In the plan, these priorities guide 31 goals and aspirations, 25 major innovations, and 52 recommended near‑term actions. The plan emphasizes reinvesting in existing neighborhoods, guiding purposeful growth, strengthening corridors, improving public spaces, supporting small businesses, aligning zoning with community values, tracking progress over time and planning flexibility as Arlington evolves.
