The best medicine …

Norvel cleared his throat and tapped on the microphone to make sure it was working. And in a matter of seconds, he made Piggly Wiggly history, because nobody – NOBODY – ever uttered the words, “For the next five minutes bananas will be half price,” with such distinction.

As a card-carrying player on the Senior Tour, I love to tip my hat to endeavors that enhance the lives of the elder statesmen (and stateswomen) among us. There’s a big one coming up. Here’s the skinny, courtesy of the GREAT Susan Schrock of the City’s Communication Dept.:

The Aging Well Expo, a one-day event geared for adults ages 50 and up, will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 29 at the Esports Stadium Arlington & Expo Center (1200 Ballpark Way). This free event, organized by the City of Arlington and the Arlington Housing Authority with support from numerous community sponsors, is expected to feature more than 100 vendors, fitness demonstrations, health screenings, housing resources, information on volunteering in the community, educational presentations and more.

This year’s keynote speaker is Cowboys Legend and Pro Football Hall of Famer Drew Pearson speaking on behalf of WellMed, one of the Expo’s generous presenting sponsors. Lindsey Olaiya, Vice President of Sales for UnitedHealthcare Medicare & Retirement, will be the event’s opening speaker at 9:30 a.m. Arlington Mayor  Jim Ross will provide the welcome. UnitedHealthcare is also a generous presenting sponsor for this year’s event.

Throughout the Aging Well Expo, participants can take advantage of numerous health screenings, including prostate screenings, mammograms, well woman exams, take home colon cancer test kits, blood and sugar and cholesterol tests, hearing evaluations, fall risk assessments and much more. Click here to see the Free Health Screenings section and learn more setting up appointments and what documents you may need to bring.

Participants who pre-register for the Aging Well Expo by 5 p.m. Sept. 15 will receive a complimentary box lunch. Door prizes will be awarded throughout the day.

Participants can take advantage of numerous health screenings, including prostate screenings, mammograms, blood and sugar and cholesterol tests, hearing evaluations, fall risk assessments and much more.
