MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. PARADE HAS NOT OBTAINED PERMIT FROM CITY OF ARLINGTON

After organizers for Monday’s planned Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade in the Entertainment District
failed to meet event planning and security-related funding requirements, the City of Arlington has
declined to issue a permit for the advertised event.

A permit is required for parades on public streets, public parks or other outdoor spaces owned by the
City. The organizers of Monday’s scheduled Toyota North Texas Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade have
not provided the required payment to cover the City’s personnel and equipment costs for traffic
management and event security, as required by the City’s Special Events Ordinance.

As a result, the City notified parade organizers on Thursday, January 11 that the planned event would
not be issued the required permit.

The City of Arlington is proud to celebrate the life and legacy of the civil rights leader and his message of inclusiveness. The City is a long-time co-sponsor of the annual Arlington Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Advancing the Dream” Celebration, now in its 29th year. This four-day celebration, which includes a scholarship banquet, cultural events and a community Day of Service, is among the largest MLK events in the state.

Arlington’s Advancing the Dream celebration, hosted by the Arlington Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration Committee, is taking place as scheduled from Friday, January 12 to Monday, January 15, 2018. The City encourages the community to participate in planned activities, which are listed at www.ArlingtonMLK.com, and celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s legacy this holiday weekend.
